Sport Fishing in Punta de Mita: Complete Beginner Guide
The Geography of Punta de Mita: Why the Fishing is World-Class
Punta de Mita sits at the northern tip of the Bay of Banderas, where the Pacific Ocean meets the protected waters of the bay. This unique geography creates a convergence of deep, cold currents and warm, shallow waters. This upwelling of nutrients attracts massive bait balls, which in turn bring in the apex predators. It is the reason why Punta de Mita is consistently ranked as one of the top sport fishing destinations on the Mexican Pacific.
Target Species: What You Can Catch
Depending on the season and the type of tour you book, you can target a wide variety of world-class game fish. Here is the breakdown of what is biting and when:
| Species | Best Season | Where to Find Them | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sailfish | May to November | Offshore (10-20 miles) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Blue & Black Marlin | June to October | Offshore (20+ miles) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Mahi-Mahi (Dorado) | June to October | Offshore & Floating debris | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| Yellowfin Tuna | Year-round | Offshore (15+ miles) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Roosterfish | Year-round | Inshore (Rocky points) | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| Spanish Mackerel & Snapper | Year-round | Inshore & Bay | ⭐⭐ |
Inshore vs. Offshore Fishing: Which Tour is Right for You?
Not all fishing tours are the same. Before you book, it is important to know what kind of experience you are looking for:
- Inshore (Bay Fishing - 3 to 4 hours): Ideal for families, beginners, and those who want a shorter trip. You stay close to the coast targeting Roosterfish, Snapper, and Mackerel. The waters are calmer, making it great for kids or people prone to seasickness.
- Offshore (Deep Sea - 7 to 10 hours): For serious anglers. You head 15 to 35 miles out into the open Pacific to target massive species like Marlin, Sailfish, and large Tuna. It requires more endurance but offers the ultimate adrenaline rush.

Do I Need Experience? (Absolute Beginners Welcome)
No experience is required. Our captains are not just drivers; they are expert fishermen who will teach you the proper technique for casting, trolling, and reeling in a big fish. Whether it's your first time holding a rod or you are a seasoned pro, the crew adapts the experience to your skill level.
The "Catch & Cook" Experience: Fresh Ceviche on Board
There is nothing like eating what you just caught. On our 6 and 8-hour tours, the captain will filet your catch and prepare fresh ceviche right on the boat using lime, tomato, onion, and cilantro. It's the freshest meal you will ever have.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we keep the fish we catch?
Yes. You can keep your catch to take home, or we can clean and filet it for you. If you are on a longer tour, the crew can also prepare it fresh on board.
What happens if we don't catch anything?
It is rare, but it is called "fishing" and not "catching" for a reason. If the fish aren't biting on a long tour, the captain will prepare ceviche with fresh fish bought that morning at the marina. You will never go home hungry.
Can I bring my own fishing gear?
Absolutely. If you have a favorite rod or lucky lure, bring it! We also provide top-tier gear if you prefer to travel light.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If the Port Captain closes the port due to unsafe conditions, we will reschedule your trip at no cost or issue a 100% refund. Safety is always our priority.
